One of Mark Wahl’s main books is Math for Humans, Teaching Math Through 8 Intelligences. This book is not for the GRE, but many of my GRE students have spoken of a connection to their child or young relative with math learning issues. Many adults can profit from Math for Humans if they have a child (grades 3 through 9) near them who is learning “on the wrong channel,” or is simply memorizing math procedures mechanically. The book gives an educational viewpoint and vocabulary for choosing appropriate learning experiences or discussing a math learning challenge with the child’s teachers. Math for Humans is also a wonderful gift for a teacher from a parent if that teacher is someone who has shown an interest in ways to make things better for their individual students. The book provides teachers (and concerned parents) with a wealth of cutting-edge theory and new terminology for learning, along with techniques and tips, and it offers numerous enriching activities the family can participate in and that meet all the intelligences of students: visual-spatial, linguistic, logical-mathematical, intrapersonal, interpersonal, naturist, musical, and bodily-kinesthetic.
